The People of Imperial Rome Looked Genetically Like the Eastern Mediterranean, Not Like Italy

Genomes from 127 individuals across 12,000 years of the Roman region show the city's ancestry shifting dramatically as the empire grew — and shifting back again after it declined.

Rome was a city of migrants long before anyone framed that as a political statement. A study of 127 ancient genomes from 29 sites in and around Rome, spanning 12,000 years, made the scale of it measurable (Antonio et al., Science, 2019, PMID: 31699931).

The shift

Through the Iron Age, individuals from the Roman region resemble other central Italian and broadly European populations of the period.

Then, over the Republic and into the Imperial era, ancestry in the city shifts markedly toward the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. Many Imperial-period Romans are genetically closest to populations from Greece, Anatolia, the Levant and the surrounding region.

This is not a subtle statistical signal. The population of the imperial capital came to look like the empire it administered — which is what a Mediterranean-wide network of trade, slavery, military service and migration would predict, with the eastern provinces far more populous and urbanised than the western ones.

And then it reversed

After the empire's decline, ancestry in the region shifts again, this time back toward central and western European populations, with later movements visible in the medieval period.

Two large turnovers in roughly a thousand years, in one well-documented place. Populations are not stable objects that occasionally get disturbed; movement is the normal condition.

Reading a Classical Antiquity result honestly

Three caveats matter more here than for earlier eras.

Cosmopolitan populations resist neat labels. If Imperial Rome was itself a mixture of Mediterranean ancestries, then "resembling Imperial Rome" is a statement about resembling a mixture — informative, but not a place of origin.

Sampling is city-centred. These genomes come from around one city. Rural Italy and most provinces are far less well sampled, and are not the same populations.

Ancestry is not citizenship. Being genetically similar to sequenced Romans says nothing about descent from any historical individual, and nothing whatever about culture, language or identity.

The tests
