The Migration That Brought Celtic Languages to Britain May Have Happened 500 Years Before the Iron Age

A study of 793 ancient genomes found a large, previously undetected movement of people into Britain during the Middle to Late Bronze Age — reshaping when, and how, the Iron Age population came to be.

Britain's ancestry had already been transformed once, when Beaker-associated groups arrived around 2500 BC. The assumption was that things then settled down until the Romans.

They did not.

A migration nobody had found

Analysis of 793 ancient genomes identified a substantial and previously undetected movement of people into southern Britain during the Middle to Late Bronze Age, roughly 1300–800 BC (Patterson et al., Nature, 2022, PMID: 34937049).

This was not a single dramatic invasion. It looks like sustained contact and movement across the Channel over several centuries, sufficient to shift the ancestry of southern Britain appreciably — and it went unnoticed until enough genomes existed to see it.

By the Iron Age, the population of southern Britain already carried this continental component. The Iron Age population was not simply the Bronze Age population with better metalwork.

The language argument

The authors noted their findings offer a plausible vector for the arrival of early Celtic languages in Britain — earlier than the Iron Age date many linguists had favoured.

The same caution as always applies. A migration capable of carrying a language is not proof that it did. But a well-dated movement of people in the right direction at a plausible time is exactly the kind of evidence the question needed, and it has shifted the debate.

Something unexpected about milk

The same study found that lactase persistence rose sharply in Britain during this period — far faster than in continental Europe at the same time, and thousands of years after dairying itself began.

The ability to digest milk in adulthood spread long after milk-drinking cultures arrived. Whatever drove that increase, it was not simply the arrival of cattle. It is one of the clearest examples available of strong, recent natural selection in a European population.
