Around 3000 BC, Herders From the Steppe Moved Into Europe and Rewrote Its Ancestry

Two 2015 studies traced a massive migration from the Pontic-Caspian steppe into late Neolithic Europe — a movement large enough to reshape the continent's gene pool and, quite possibly, its languages.

By 3000 BC, Europe had been farming for thousands of years. The Neolithic was mature, settled and, it was assumed, fairly stable.

Then two studies published in the same month of 2015 showed that it was not.

The migration

Analysis of ancient genomes documented a massive migration from the Pontic-Caspian steppe into central Europe around 2500 BC. The incoming ancestry, associated with the Yamnaya pastoralists, accounted for a large share of the ancestry of the Corded Ware culture that followed (Haak et al., Nature, 2015, PMID: 25731166).

A companion study sequencing Bronze Age Eurasians reached a compatible conclusion across a wider geography, describing the period as one of large-scale population movement and turnover rather than cultural diffusion (Allentoft et al., Nature, 2015, PMID: 26062507).

These were herders with wheeled vehicles and domesticated horses moving into a continent of established farming villages. Within centuries, their ancestry was widespread.

The language question

This is where the finding became genuinely contentious. The timing and direction of the steppe migration match one long-standing hypothesis for the spread of Indo-European languages into Europe — the steppe hypothesis, as against an earlier Anatolian-farmer origin.

Genetics can show that people moved. It cannot show what they said. The correlation is striking and the inference remains contested among linguists, which is the appropriate state for it to be in.

What arrived with them

Steppe-derived ancestry brought more than a language debate. Later work has linked this period to shifts in lactase persistence frequency, height-associated variants, and — with less certainty — pathogen exposure, including early forms of plague found in Bronze Age individuals.

None of these were instant. Lactase persistence, in particular, remained rare for a long time after the milk-drinking cultures arrived, which is a useful corrective to any story where a trait sweeps in with a people.
